2006 Season ReCap: There will be additional history as we get pictures, etc.
Pirates end at 10-1 The Pirates finished their season with a tough 17-14 loss to St. Pius. Uncharacteristic turnovers and untimely penalties gave the Warriors too many chances to hang in the game and it finally led to a late fourth quarter field goal which put St. Pius ahead. We want to thank all of the Seniors this year for making a great contribution to Pirate Football and salute them on how they helped develop the underclassmen and bring along a young team. Media Coverage: www.MECSports.COM will do an Internet broadcast. TimeWarner cable will broadcast the game on Friday night at 7:00 as their game of the week on Kansas City Metro Sports.
Week 10: A Perfect "10" Pirates crush Smithville Warriors to move to 10-0!!! Sets up Sectional Rematch against St. Pius on Wed. Nov. 8th In a game that everyone going in thought would be a close defensive struggle, the Platte County Pirates got going on both sides of the ball in the first quarter and ended any dreams that the Smithville Warriors had of upsetting the surging Pirate team. MECSports.com decided to broadcast the game on-line live. It is available at this link. Several media outlets had TV coverage of the game in limited highlights. The best 2 seemed to be KMBC 9 news that led their high school segment with the Pirates. NBC Action News41 also had good footage of several Pirate touchdowns including Eric Barmann's punt return in the 2nd half. KMBC has their coverage online, watch the video here: So far, no link for the Channel 41 Action News coverage. The team seems to continue to improve and play big when it counts as they now face St. Pius in a rematch of last year's close sectional win. Last year, the St. Pius team got away with a hold on a PAT attempt only to be called for it on a crucial field goal try by the Pirates. That defensive holding call for interfering with the center on a kick snap allowed the Pirates to come back and win last year. This year's team will need to play well. We will need all the fan support possible for this big sectional game.
A summary of the next level in the Playoffs: November 8th (Wednesday) 7:00 PM

of the game depends on who wins. If Grain Valley wins, they will host the
winner of St. Pius and Platte County. Week 9: Redemption in Dragon land! Pirates move to 9-0 with a 39-14 domination of Cameron Dragons. MECSports has some great pictures HERE Sets up one game for MEC and District 16 Championship. The Pirates mixed up the defense a bit and confused the Cameron offense enough to use two first quarter interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Platte County jumped out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Excellent offensive play from Jake Crawford and Kyle Knox kept the Dragons from ever stopping the Pirate offense. Knox ended up with eight catches for 200 yards to lead the Pirates. First quarter interceptions by Cody Hunt and Nick Maxwell both returned for 6 points quieted the Cameron crowd and helped the huge Pirate following to keep up the load cheering all game long. District 16 play comes down to a one game with Smithville. On the line will be the Missouri Class 3A district championship as well as the Midland Empire Conference Title. Here's a rundown of the district and conference so far: Friday, Oct. 20th

Week 7: Pirates overwhelm Lafayette 41-6 St. Joseph Lafayette seemed to be overmatched against the Pirates as they coasted to an easy 41-6 victory. The varsity starters played less than two quarters and the JV got some good game experience. The KC Star continues to ignore the Pirates. A new High School sports writer there has yet to even have a game capsule up on their pages. We'll post news as we can find it on-line JV Wins in Double OT at Kearney 22-20 Freshmen lose to Lafayette 18-8 Week 6: Pirates blowout Maryville 35-0, move to 6-0 for the first time since "The Streak" Maryville turned the ball over early, and unlike last week, the Pirates capitalized on the Spoofhound mistakes and rolled to a relatively easy 35-0 victory. Maryville's only real success came on a reverse inside handoff which garnered them some yardage early, but the Pirate defense adjusted and began to stop the hounds on the ground and through the air. Coverage in the local papers was again limited. The Star is going through some changes in their coverage, so we'll see. The St. Joe Paper had some coverage, but they want paid subscriptions for on-line access. Maryville's Northwest Missourian had an article: You can click here to get it. Week 5: Too Close at Benton: Pirates win 14-13 What started with Benton giving up several turnovers early in the game could have turned into a Pirate rout; but it ended up being a frustrating evening as our Pirates didn't capitalize and never really got into any rhythm barely squeaking out a tough 14-13 win. Benton had a chance to go for 2 after a touchdown with 44 seconds remaining in the game, but opted finally to try to tie the ballgame at 14 only to have the kick hook wide to the left. The ensuing onsides kick failed and the Pirates knelt down to end the game. Week 4: Pirates Dominate Hornets 35-10 In a game that was supposed to be much closer, the Pirates dominated on both offense and defense on their way to a 35-10 pounding of Chillicothe. Chillicothe could not muster much offense and only scored 3 points until late in the fourth quarter when the JV was playing. The Pirates used a balanced attack to score on the ground and through the air. The only negative was the number of holding calls the Pirates had, which threatened to stop several drives, but seemed only to motivate the offense to buckle down and work that much harder. Week 3: Pirates WIN AT MARSHALL! A long drive to Marshall and a great start to the game. The Pirates recovered an early Marshall fumble and converted it to a touchdown in the first quarter. After another Marshall turnover, it looked like the Pirates may roll, but a blocked pass that was ruled a lateral was scooped up by an Owl player and returned for a touchdown setting up the first time this year that the Pirates have trailed in a game. That set the tone for a game where it appeared the Pirates were in control, only to give up a wild broken play and allow the Marshall team a glimmer of hope. Recent Media Coverage of the Platte County Pirates Football Program:Several interviews and stories are in the works. We should be seeing some coverage soon. Kansas City Star's Sam Mellinger comments on Platte
County in his Q&A column: You can catch the Star's coverage of HS Sports at http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/high_school/ Sam has some knowledge of PC and last year was definitely on the bandwagon, but then went to the Cameron game and lost a bit of confidence. Here's one of his recent answers on PC.
Q: What is your
thoughts on the football team this year from Platte County? Also
is the rumor that Mike Winchell from "Friday night Lights" fame
taking a job at Blue Springs South really legit?
A: The Winchell
thing was a well-circulated prank. About Platte County, that's a
tough one to call. On the one hand, they went 11-2 last year,
which is great, right? But they've been so ridiculously good for
so ridiculously long I know there's some looking at that
(especially with the two losses being blowouts) as nothing too
special. I think they lose something like 19 or 20 seniors from
a class that Sherman called one of the best he's ever had, so
there is some work to be done. But until Platte County ever
plays out a stinker season, I think you have to assume they'll
be one of the best teams around.
