MAPS are UP |
Coaching Search begins The search is on for a new head coach for the Pirates. Applications are being taken and candidates are being looked at by the Athletic Director, the High School Principal and the District Superintendent. A number of qualified candidates from within the Pirate program have already expressed their interest and have applied. As well, there have been outside inquiries and applications from successful coaches in the area. If you have a person you would like to support for the position, please do so.
Knox, Spearman capture All-State Honors Kyle Knox and Jerome Spearman were honored as All-State Second Team players by the Football Coaches Association. In a year where Platte County ended up ranked #3 behind Harrisonville and Grain Valley in the MaxPreps Class 3 Power poll, it seems too bad that the coaches did not recognize more of the great Platte County players. Knox, one of the best receivers to have played over the past 2 years at any level and Spearman, a defensive lineman who very few teams could account for were selected during the early December coaches association meeting in Sedalia. Knox, Spearman, Barmann get All-District Honors Defensive Back and Running Back, Eric Barmann joined Kyle Knox and Marcus Spearman on the Missouri Class 3 All-District team, which is chosen by the sportswriters of the Kansas City Star. Eric Barmann was selected as a defensive back.

Quarterfinal Finale After what was one of the best back and forth match ups in recent history, the Pirates lost on a last second field goal kicked by the Grain Valley Eagles. The Pirates end their season 10-2. Grain Valley featured a super fast running game and appeared to be poised to take the lead late in the game with a decent drive to the Pirate 13 only to fumble the ball and give the home team some hope that a drive to end the game could be in their future. But, after a couple of runs and the only holding call of the night, it appeared that overtime would be in order. However, with less than 30 seconds to play, a pass play, a sack, an arm hit during a pass and a big Grain Valley lineman looking up to the heavens to see a ball floating down into his arms all led to Grain Valley having one more play with four seconds to go. Grain Valley then kicked a game winning field goal to put the Pirates' hopes for another run to the state 3A Semi-Finals. SECTIONAL SURVIVORS The Pirates survived and advanced Wednesday night against a pesky St. Pius X team 10-3. On a night where offensive continuity and production was hard to find, the defense stood up to the test and kept St. Pius from scoring any touchdowns. The lone touchdown in the game was scored early in the second half following a long, sustained drive by the Pirates. Other drives had been successful, but stalled after a bit, one ending in a missed long field goal and the other resulting in a field goal. The Pirates now face an undefeated Grain Valley team
that will come into Pirate Stadium on Monday, Nov. 12th at 7:00 PM. See
the Playoff Picture below.
DISTRICT CHAMPIONS!!!!!!! The Pirates left no doubt early against the
Smithville Warriors. Platte County rolled up a 23-0 lead in the first half
to effectively quiet any hopes Smithville had of winning the district title.
Then, in the second half, a conservative approach with some key turnovers almost
gave the Warriors hope again, with the Pirates winning 23-15. The game did
not really feel that close, as the Pirates still drove the ball effectively with
both the run and the pass in the second half, only to have a couple of turnovers
give the Warriors too many opportunities. Here's how the district play
finished out.

Pirates savage the Savannah homecoming The Pirates moved their overall record to 7-1 and
began District 16 play with a victory. There are three district games and
the Pirates need to win them all to advance to the State Sectionals on November

Disappointment The Pirates will respond and this will lead to
greater resolve as they travel next week to St. Joseph Lafayette.
Lafayette is working to rebuild after several years of low player numbers.
They seem to be on the right track and have begun to build some respect in the
MEC.
5-0 to celebrate 50 Years of Pirate Excellence Coaches honored before 44-21 thrashing of
St. Joseph Benton. Coach Foster was the one who turned the Pirate Football team around... 50 YEARS AGO!. In 1957, Coach Dick Foster began coaching at Platte City High. He coached until 1968, when one of his top assistants, Bob Maxwell took over. Coach Maxwell then built on the Foster legacy and continued the success of the PCHS program. Coach Maxwell was in the district for 30 years, serving as head coach from 1968-1977. Today, one of Bob Maxwell's grandsons Nick is a senior WR/Safety for the Pirate varsity. Plaques were presented to the coaches as well as to Coach Chip Sherman, who has accounted for the past 20 years of Pirate excellence. The two coaches also served as honorary captains for the mid-field coin toss. The game started well, had a sloppy second quarter,
only to see the Pirates take control in the third quarter. The game sets up a 5-0 vs. 5-0 Homecoming matchup next week against Maryville. Pirate defense had to make a stop late in the 4th Quarter with Chillicothe down 8 and did it. The game was played well, but an almost two-hour weather delay (for a 25 minute rainstorm) caused it to be a late night at Jerry Litton Memorial stadium. The Pirates fought throughout the night against a spirited Chillicothe team, with the stadium announcer reminding all that this was the "State Second Ranked Pirates" who were in town. Every positive play for the home Hornets gave the Chillicothe team hope as the announcer reminded them all that they just had success against the "State Second Ranked Pirates".
4-0 after tough win in Chillicothe: Pirates slog it out with Hornets through weather delay 21-13 The Pirate defense had to make a stop late in the 4th Quarter with Chillicothe down 8 and did it. We've got some video here: Tyler St. Louis made one of the best defensive plays, fighting off a blocker to create a big loss for the Hornets. Here's the video: Travis Cash jumped up and blocked
a pass on the Hornet's last drive. Cash almost intercepted the pass, but
nonetheless left the Hornets with a difficult 4th and 10. Here's the
video:
Once again the Pirates scored on their second play from scrimmage. Senior Kyle Knox had another big night receiving and
the four headed monster backfield enjoyed success running the ball all night
long with junior Marcus Spearman ripping off several long runs. Interesting article from the Marshall perspective here. On-line video will be posted Saturday here, so check back. 2-0 With big win over Van Horn The Pirate varsity didn't get a lot of work in during the game Friday with Van Horn. The offense scored on its second play from scrimmage and continued to dominate. The score was so lopsided, that at 28-0 in the first quarter, Coach Chip Sherman took the first string out for the rest of the game and turned it over to the capable JV squad. Van Horn managed to pick off a Jeff Cline pass and then use that short field to score in the first half. The visiting team also scored another touchdown in the second half, but the game was never in doubt as the Pirates rolled to a 44-12 victory.
Junior Varsity victory! The JV Pirates continued the domination of the O'Hara Celtics with a convincing 32-12 win on Tuesday afternoon at Pirates Stadium. Combining strong running with a swarming defensive effort, the JV looked good. The next game up for the Junior Varsity is a long drive to Odessa on Monday, September 10th. Start the season with a WIN!!! The Pirates sputtered a bit early, but settled in
and completed a good win over Archbishop O'Hara High School 31-7. The game was marked with too many penalties. 14 penalties called on the Pirates won't do against a tougher opponent, but the defense was stingy and the offense was opportunistic. Once the defense adjusted to the unconventional O'Hara "Pistol" offense, O'Hara did not mount a significant threat after their opening drive. A big interception by Senior linebacker Tyler St. Louis stopped one drive. As soon as it is ready for Web format, video clips of the big plays will be posted here.
